GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry boys’ soccer team keeps pushing farther and farther on the road to greatness. The Pirates have not lost a match since August 22 against Perry County Central.
The Pirates have already brought home their first 58th District Championship after they defeated Pikeville by a score of 4-0. Now after beating Prestonsburg in the first round of the regional tournament they will face off against Pikeville again in the regional championship match. Belfry beat Prestonsburg by a score of 7-0.
Wilson Harris scored the first goal of the game from an assist from teammate Blake Mendoza during the 4th minute of play. One minute later Dylan Brown knocked one past the goalie after an assist from teammate Matt Lambert to put the Pirates ahead by two quick scores.
Lambert passed the ball to Ashton Leedy who scored during the 20th minute for the Pirates. Lambert scored his first goal of the night on an assist from teammate Noah McNamee during the 27th minute of play to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead.
Mendoza passed the ball to Leedy who lined up and put one more past the Blackcats goalie right before the end of the first half giving Belfry a 5-0 lead at the half.
Prestonsburg gave a good effort to gain some momentum but the Pirate defense would not allow it to happen. Late in the game Leedy found some open field and worked the ball toward the goal and scored during the 70th minute.
Mendoza scored the last goal of the game and finalized the Pirates advancement to the regional championship game.
Belfry will now face off once again with Pikeville, the Pirates have beaten Pikeville three times this season. Should the Pirates continue this winning streak and sink the Panthers one more time they will make school history as the first soccer team to ever win a regional championship.
Belfry attempted 32 shots on the goal and Prestonsburg goalie, Dalton Trusty, had 13 saves during match. The Blackcats attempted seven shots on the Pirates goal and goalie Dominic Gentile had five saves during the Match.
The Belfry boys’ will face the Pikeville Panthers for the 15th Regional Championship tonight, (Thursday) Oct, 22. at the Belfry High School soccer field.
