BURCH – It was 8th grade night at Phil Sizemore Field when the Burch Middle School Bulldogs faced the Matewan Tigers. The Bulldogs were looking to finish county play undefeated.
Gavin Farley, along with several other of his teammates, decided to go all out in their last home game as a member of the Burch Bulldog football program and defeated the Tigers by a score of 48-0.
Farley had his best game as a Bulldog by leading the team with seven tackles, one fumble recovery, 39 yards rushing, 55 reception yards and 2 touchdowns. The game was never in question as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 28-0 lead by halftime and scored 20 more points in the second half to win 48-0.
Drew Hatfield finished the game with 101 rushing yards on only four carries and two TD’s on the ground. Hatfield also threw for 55 yards and two more touchdowns, both going to Farley.
The defense was led by Farley’s 7 tackles with one tackle for a loss. Isaac Moore also stepped up big on the defensive side of the ball. Moore finished with 6 tackles, four of those for a loss and two big sacks. Kendell Tackett also contributed four tackles and one sack.
The Tigers were held to only 56-yards of total offense for the game and committed 4 costly turnovers. The Bulldogs finish the season with a 6-1 record and 5-0 in county play. Burch will take on the very same Tigers in the first round of the county playoffs and Gilbert will take on Lenore.
The winners will play for the Mingo County Championship game on Oct. 29, at Harless Stadium. (This game could be changed since that Thursday is Trick or Treat night.)
