GOODY, Ky – The Belfry Pirates faced off against the Lawrence County Bulldogs on Friday night. The game was a close one but the Pirates pulled off a win with a score of 27-23.
The Bulldogs scored the first points of the game on a 78-yard pass with 11:21 left to in the first quarter. The extra point kick was good and the Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
Xondre Willis scored next for the Pirates on a 31-yard scamper to the end zone with 7:47 left to go in the first quarter. Austin Woolum added the extra point and the Pirates tied it up with a score of 7-7.
Lawrence County came firing back in the second quarter with a 32-yard field goal at the 7:48 mark to take the lead with a score of 10-7. The Bulldogs entered halftime with the lead.
The first score of the second half happened when Noah Corbett rushed for 11-yards into the end zone with 2:06 left to go in the third quarter. Woolum added the extra point and the Pirates jumped ahead by a score of 10-14.
Cameron Catron scored again for the Pirates with 8:10 left to play in the game on a 14-yard run. Woolum added another extra point and Belfry stayed ahead 10-21.
The Bulldogs scored next on a 72-yard run with 7:17 left to go in the game. They made the extra point kick and the score stood at 17-21 in favor of the Pirates. With 4:12 left to go The Bulldogs punched in a score from 1-yard out but missed the extra point kick, Lawrence County took the lead by a score of 23-21.
Willis scored the final points for the Pirates with 1:43 left to play in the game on a 53-yard run. Belfry attempted to convert a two-point conversion but was unsuccessful and the game ended with a final score of 23-27.
Belfry finished the game with 362-yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns. Willis finished the game with 120 rushing yards on 13 carries, Catron finished the game with 77-yards on 10 carries, Derek Wellman earned 60-yards on 13 carries, Andrew Fletcher rushed 10 times for 52-yards and Corbett rushed 12 times for 53-yards.
The Pirates had 7 fumbles during the contest. Willis Fumbled three times, Corbett fumbled twice and Wellman and Catron fumbled once apiece.
The Pirates defense gave up 226-yards passing on 27 completions. The Bulldogs scored two passing touchdowns. Lawrence County only rushed for 60-yards on 23 carries and scored one rushing touchdown.
Defensive leaders for Belfry were Wellman with 10 tackles, Catron with nine tackles and Nate Sanger with eight tackles. Ray Horton added five tackles.
The Pirates move on to a record of 6-1 on the season and will travel to Inez next week to face the Sheldon Clark Cardinals.
