LENORE — The Lenore Middle School football team took a pounding last week at Burch but bounced back on Thursday night by hammering the Williamson Middle School Wolfpack, 34-6, at the Lenore football field on 8th Grade Night.
Lenore (3-2) was led by Caleb May, who scored all five of the Rangers’ touchdowns.
Williamson, which dropped to 2-3 on the season, jumped on top of the Rangers 6-0 with Josh Wellman’s 41-yard touchdown run at the 6:22 mark of the first quarter.
Then it was all May and all Rangers after that as Lenore torched the Pack for 34 unanswered points.
The first came with 1:21 to go in the first quarter as May scored on an 11-yard TD run. Quarterback Joby Sorrell then passed to Easton Davis on the two-point conversion play as the Rangers went up for good, 8-6.
Then with 7:47 to go until halftime, the Rangers were in the end zone again as May scored a defensive touchdown — an interception of Williamson quarterback Brady Dove — and went 39 yards for a score. Fullback Parker Brewer was stopped short of the goal line on the conversion play but LMS led 14-6.
Sorrell and May then hooked up again at the 4:43 mark on a 50-yard touchdown pass and Brewer was able to tack on the two-point conversion run as Lenore led 22-6 at the half.
Lenore drove the ball deep into Wolfpack territory at the beginning of the third quarter as Sorrell tossed a 34-yard bomb to May to the 1-yard line.
The Rangers, however, were stopped by the Williamson defense after a Lenore penalty, a 6-yard loss on a running play, an incomplete pass in the end zone and a pass to Brewer that went for only one yard to the 11 on a fourth-and-goal play.
Williamson was then forced to punt, and moments later, May was in the end zone again after a 40-yard touchdown pass from Sorrell at the 1:11 mark of the third quarter. The conversion play failed as the Rangers led 28-6.
Lenore added one more touchdown with 25.5 ticks to go on May’s 24-yard score to finish out the scoring at 34-6. The two-point conversion run was no good.
The Rangers are scheduled to get back into action next Thursday night at the rival Kermit Blue Devils. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Kermit football field. Williamson is slated to host Gilbert on Thursday in a 7 p.m. clash with the Lions.
