Staff Report

West Virginia moved into the top 25 in both major polls following Saturday’s 45-6 pounding of rival Maryland.

The Mountaineers (3-0) are No. 23 in the Associated Press top 25 and No. 21 in the Amway Coaches poll. It is the first time WVU has been ranked since the first week of November last season, before a road loss to Texas dropped the Mountaineers out of the rankings.

WVU is one of five Big 12 teams ranked in the AP poll, along with TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The Mountaineers travel to face No. 15 Oklahoma this Saturday.

It will be the seventh time under fifth-year WVU coach Dana Holgorsen that the Mountaineers have faced a ranked opponent while being in the top 25. West Virginia is 3-3 in those games, including last season’s 31-30 loss to No. 10 TCU.

This is the 23rd time WVU has appeared in the AP poll since Holgorsen took over as the head coach before the 2011 season.

The Top 25 teams in The Associated Press college football poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, records through Sept. 26, total points based on 25 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 25th-place vote, and previous ranking:
