Belfry is still number one in AP Prep Poll

GOODY, Ky. – For the fourth week in a row the Belfry Pirates sit high atop the Class 3A AP Prep Polls.

Belfry has made the number one spot a home for them during the first half of the season. With 14 first place votes the 5-0 Pirates beat out Boyle County once again who only received two first place votes.

The Pirates have already beaten some very notable teams and continue to improve with every down played. Belfry beat Tates Creek, who is a Class 6A school, during the Pike County Bowl and beat Newport Catholic two games ago to set the tone for the season.

The big win for the Pirates was when they got some payback against the Pikeville Panthers who handed them their first loss of the season last year. Belfry only lost two games last season and still won the Class 3A state championship. This year the Pirates were ready for Pikeville and showed no mercy beating the Panthers 34-8.

With their most recent win against Knoxville Catholic the Pirates head into mid-season outscoring their opponents by multiple touchdowns per game. Up next for Belfry are the biggest and arguably the most talented school in West Virginia, Cabell Midland.

Last season the only other team to beat the Pirates was Johnson Central, who is now ranked number two in the Class 4A standings. The Pirates will face Johnson Central in the last game of the regular season.

The only visible discrepancy that the Pirates might have, which might not even be a problem at all, is their pass coverage. Belfry has allowed opponents to gain a lot of yards through the air but has yet to allow one passing touchdown, but passing is what Cabell Midland does best. If the Pirates can contain the passing game of Cabell Midland and continue to dominate teams like they have in the first part of the season they have a real opportunity to continue undefeated throughout the regular season.
