RED JACKET – The Mingo Central Miners beat a talented Nitro team on homecoming night by a score of 58-26.
The Mingo Central offense controlled the game against Nitro, Friday night and pulled off a big win. This win will help Mingo Central in the state rankings after winning against the Class 3A team. Last week Mingo Central sat just eligible for playoff contention at 16th place, next week they will move up for sure.
Joe Hunt scored first for the Miners with 7:33 left to play in the first quarter on a 5-yard run. Jeremy Harrison added the extra-point kick to make the first score of the ballgame 7-0 in favor of the Miners.
Running back Deonte Joplin scored next for the Miners after he returned a punt 79-yard’s to the house to put the Miners up by two scores. Harrison added the extra point to make the score 14-0 with 5:21 left to play in the first quarter.
James Buckalew put the first points on the board for the Nitro Wildcats after he connected with James Hanna on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Nitro missed the extra-point kick.
Hunt scored again for the Miners on a 18-yard touchdown with 10:08 left to play in the first half. Harrison made the extra-point kick and brought the score to 20-6 in favor of the Miners.
Quarterback Steven Hammond connected with Stephen Whitt for a 23-yard passing touchdown with 2:38 left to play before halftime. Harrison added the extra-point to make the score 27-6.
Tyler Grimmette intercepted a Nitro pass with 0:38 left to play before the half ended and returned the ball down field for a score. Harrison added the extra-point and the Miners went into halftime with a lead of 34-6.
Hunt scored the first points of the second half with 8:09 left to play in the third quarter after he punched it in from 10-yards out. Harrison added the extra-point.
Hammond completed a 12-yard scoring pass to Taylor Thornsbury with 1:03 left to play in the third quarter. Harrison missed the extra-point and the Miners held onto a 47-6 lead over the Wildcats.
Austin Banks put some points on the board for the Wildcats on a 8-yard touchdown run with 8:14 left to play in the game. The Wildcats failed to complete the two-point conversion but brought the score to 47-12.
Caleb Lester scored next for the Miners with 7:33 left to play in the game with a 46-yard run to pay dirt. Harrison missed the extra-point.
Banks scored two more times for the Wildcats and added one two-point conversion to make the final score 53-26.
Mingo Central gained 475-yards of total offense and Nitro gained 329 total yards.
Hammond completed seven of his 12 passes for 124-yards and two touchdowns.
Joplin finished the game with 120-yards rushing on 9 carries and Hunt finished with 103-yards on 8 carries and three rushing touchdowns.
Caleb Lester led the Miners on defense with six total tackles. Ethan Collins and Trey Lester finished with four tackles apiece, and Issac Fox and Grimmette had one interception apiece.
Mingo Central moves into a record of 3-1 on the season and stays 1-1 in the Cardinal Conference.
