Cardinal Conference standings; Miners tied for 3rd place

Heading into the midway point of the season the Cardinal Conference is a bit jumbled. The two front runners are Chapmanville and Tolsia.

The Rebels, coached by Mike Smith, are one of the surprise teams in the state in Class AA. The Rebels will host undefeated Tug Valley (4-0) Friday night.

Chapmanville and Tolsia are both undefeated in the league, but Chapmanville has played one more conference game than Tolsia has. At the beginning of the year it was Wayne and Mingo Central that were projected to be number one and two in the conference. Those two teams finished at the top of the conference last season. Wayne was the only team to defeat the Miners last season, once in the regular season and in the second round of the playoffs. Mingo Central will host Wayne on Friday, October 2.

Those two teams are now tied for third place with only one conference win on their records. Wayne and Mingo Central both lost to the Tolsia Rebels earlier in the season.

Poca and Herbert Hoover are tied for fifth place, however Poca has only played one conference game so far this season. Sissonville and Scott come in last in seventh and eighth place.

In the state AP Poll, Mingo Central sets in 16th place which is just good enough to squeak into the playoffs if they were to begin this week. Home field advantage will be a major task for the Miners to pull off; they will have to rise up to the No. 8 spot to be eligible for home field advantage and host a game at Harless Stadium.
