Tug No. 5, Mingo No. 16 in rankings

Panthers travel to Tolsia; Miners host Nitro

If the West Virginia High School playoffs started today, Tug Valley would be hosting a first round playoff game as they are ranked No. 5 this week in the Class A ranking released Tuesday by the WVSSAC.

Mingo Central would hit the road and squeak into the Class AA playoffs as they are ranked No. 16.

The top 16 teams in each classification make the post season in the Mountain State.

However, this is only the midway point in the season. Mingo Central is 2-1 and coming off of a bye week. The only blemish on the Miner’s schedule so far is a tough loss to No. 5 Tolsia. It will be homecoming on Miner Mountain as MCHS plays host to Class AAA Nitro Friday night.

Tug Valley, Coached by Tony Clusky, is 4-0 and will travel up U.S. 52 this week to take on the undefeated 4-0 Rebels.

The Panthers and Rebels are old rivals, however they have not played in recent years. This should be one of the best games in the state so far in the 2015 season.

The Man Hillbillies, a future opponent for Tug Valley, comes in at No. 1 this week in Class A. The Logan County school will host the Panthers later in the season.

Fairmont Senior is No. 1 in Class AA this week.

Another Logan County school, Chapmanville Regional, is ranked No. 7 in Class AA. The Tigers, who are in the Cardinal Conference with Mingo Central, is a future opponent for Coach Yogi Kinder and the Miners.

A lot can happen in the final half of the season. Both Mingo County schools should make the playoffs. However, where they end up in the final rankings will not be decided until November.

Until that time each school will take one game at a time.
