GOODY, K.y. – The Belfry Pirates are sailing smoothly through the season and show no signs of slowing down. The Pirates beat Newport Central Catholic by a score of 28-10 Friday night at CAM stadium.
The Pirates dominated the ground game with 235 rushing yards out of 44 rushing attempts. The Pirates had four rushing touchdowns and 19 rushing first downs.
Andrew Fletcher led the rushing attack for the Pirates with 81-yards on 13 rushing attempts and added one rushing touchdown. Derek Wellman was not far behind with two rushing touchdowns and 77-yards on 15 carries. Justin Adkins added the first points to the scoreboard Friday night for the Pirates from an athletic 38 yard run.
Newport Central scored first from a 25–yard field goal with 2:01 left to go in the first quarter to make the initial score 3-0. Newport Central added another score from a passing touchdown with 2:11 left to go before halftime. The thoroughbreds went into halftime leading the Pirates with a score of 10-7.
The Pirates controlled the second half by scoring three unanswered touchdowns.
Nate Sanger led the Pirates on defense with 10 total tackles. Fletcher added 9 total tackles. Ray Horton only had 6 total tackles but applied pressure to the Thoroughbred offense all night.
The Pirate defense held Newport Central to only 169-yards of total offense; they had 86 –yards rushing and 83-yards passing.
The Pirates are now 3-0 on the season, next week Belfry will host the Pikeville Panthers. The Panthers handed the Pirates their only loss of the year last season. The Panthers are 3-1 on the season after losing to Paintsville two weeks ago.
