Panthers win season opener

NAUGATUCK – The Tug Valley Panthers kicked off the first game of the regular against Sherman of Friday night. The Panthers pulled off a win, defeating Sherman 36-7.

Tug Valley scored first with a three yard pass to sophomore Jeremy Dillon. They completed the two point conversion and quickly jumped out in front of Sherman. Tug Valley scored again by a long pass from quarterback Tyler Conley to Calvin Blankenship for a 83 yard score to make the scoreboard read 14-0 in favor of the Panthers.

The Panthers scored again from another long run from Corbin Oliver when he made it 83 yards down field for the touchdown with two minutes and forty-two seconds left to go in the second quarter, to make the score 20-0.

Conley and Blankenship connected again on a 49 yard pass completion to make the score 28-0 after Dillon ran in the two point conversion.

After halftime, Tug Valley got lucky by scoring a safety after the ball sailed over the Sherman punter’s head and into the end zone.

With eight minute and thirty-two second left to go in the third quarter, Oliver ran a 45 yard run into the end zone to make the score 36-0 in favor of the Panthers.

Right before the end of the game Willen Christian ran in a 12 yard score for Sherman, the extra point kick made the final score 36-7, with the Panthers clinching the win.

Oliver led the ground game for the Panthers by getting 174 yards on six carries and scoring two touchdowns. Calvin Blankenship had two receptions for 132 yards with two touchdowns.

TVHS quarterback Conley went 3 for 5 on passing attempts for 135 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively Ike Starr had nine tackles for the Panthers.

Sherman finished the game with 39 rushing attempts for 143 yards, and 95 receiving yards on 10 pass completions. They had 238 yards of total offense.

Tug Valley ended the game with 409 total yards of offense with 37 carries for 274 yards and three passing completions for 135 yards. The Panthers are off to a great start.
