INEZ, Ky. – Kash Daniels and the Paintsville Tigers stole the show during Friday night’s game against the Sheldon Clark Cardinals. Both teams met at Sheldon Clark Stadium for the first regular season game of the year. Last season the Paintsville Tigers made it to the Semi-finals of the Class 1A state playoffs and they entered this season with a lot of that talent returning.

The first half belonged to the Paintsville Tigers as they scored 40 unanswered points against the Cardinals. Right off the bat, 13 seconds into the ball game, Kent Phelps, scored the first touchdown with a 65 yard run to pay dirt. Brett Bartley added the point after field goal to bring the score to 7-0 in favor of the Tigers.

Kash Daniels scored the second touchdown for the Tigers on the goal line with eight minutes and 38 seconds left in the first quarter. Sheldon Clark Head Coach, Adam Turner called a quick time out to regroup his troops. The Cardinals came out of the timeout and completed a 40 yard pass to running back Brandon Butcher setting them up in the Tigers Red Zone. The Cardinals failed to score on the drive.

Paintsville running back, Kent Phelps, scored once again with five minutes left to go in the first quarter, making the score 19-0 with an athletic 74 yard rushing touchdown. Bartley added the extra point for the Tigers. The Cardinals were forced to punt on the next drive and Tiger running back Kent Phelps returned the ball 40 yards back to the Cardinals 20 yard line. The Tigers drove the ball to the goal line where Jonathan Lemaster punched in the score from one yard out. The extra point was made by Bartley to make the score 27-0 in favor of the Tigers.

To start the second quarter Kash Daniels scored on a 25 yard quarterback sneak up the middle, then after a quick Sheldon Clark possession the Tigers were given the ball back and Daniels scored another touchdown bringing the score to 39-0 for the Tigers. Bartley added the extra point to make the score an even 40.

After halftime Coach Turner had the Cardinals come out fighting, senior running back Brandon Butcher scored a 4 yard touchdown early in the third quarter. The Cardinals failed to convert the extra point attempt. The game continued one sided in favor of the Tigers. Late in the third quarter, Chris Allen completed a 24 yard touchdown pass to Richard Grace for the Tigers to make the score 46-6.

The Cardinals tried desperately to close the scoring gap however; the damage had already been done. The Cardinals added one more score with time running out from the one yard line to make the final score 46-12.

The Sheldon Clark ground game was led by senior running back Brandon Butcher who finished the game with 57 yards on 18 carried and one touchdown. Blake Harless added 32 yards on five carries, and Chase Muncy added 15 yards on four carries with one touchdown.

For the Piantsville Tigers the ground game was led by Kent Phelps who finished with 177 yards on five carries and two touchdowns, plus one 50 yard punt return. Kash Daniels contributed 72 yards rushing for the Tigers on four carries with three touchdowns. Jonathan Lemaster added the one yard touchdown before halftime. Richard Grace scored the 24 yard touchdown reception for the Tigers.

Next on the schedule for the Sheldon Clark Cardinals is a home game against the Prestonsburg Blackcats on Aug, 28. At 7:30 p.m.

It was a rough start for the Cardinals and first year Head Coach Adam Turner, but the Cardinals hope to get the early season wrinkles ironed out before they head into the fat of the season.
