GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates defeated the Sheldon Clark Cardinals 15-5 in baseball action Monday evening at Massey Energy Field at the BHS sports complex.
The Pirates, of Coach Michael Hagy, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sheldon Clark took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third frame, but the Pirates took the lead back with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.
After going up 8-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Belfry blew the game open with a 7-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In his last three games, Belfry junior Colton Cross has been on fire going 9-for-10 at the plate, with six doubles and six RBIs. He also has two walks during those games.
In the bottom of the first, Belfry’s Matt Fought reached safely on an error, then Devin Varney singled to left field and Colton Cross stroked a 2-run double to right field. Senior Jordan Scott was safe on an error by the third baseman and Cross scored.
The Pirates scored two more in the third when senior outfielder Cameron Catron reached first base on a bunt single and advanced to second on error. Devin Varney was safe on an error by the shortstop and Catron scored. Cross then lined an RBI double to right field.
In the fourth inning Belfry senior Austin Woolum walked, followed by a Matt Fought intentional walk. Catron had a sacrifice bunt and Varney smacked a 2-run double to right field. Cross got another RBI single to left field to increase Belfry’s lead.
In the bottom of the sixth Varney started the rally with a single to left field. Cross and Scott both walked ad then freshman Kaleb Taylor got an RBI after being hit by a pitch. Sean Cochran had the same thing happen to bring in another run. Avery Browning then grounded an RBI single to center field and Woolum was beaned, which brought in another run. Fought hit a long sac fly to center field and Catron pounded a 2-rum single to left field to end the game.
The winning hurler for Belfry was Browning and Taylor was credited with a save. The losing pitcher was Draylon Stafford..
Belfry will host Johnson Central on Thursday.
