A love of family and dessert has led to a new business in Belfry, Ky.: A Piece of Cake.
Angela Wolford, who owns the confectionery with her husband Dennis, said the she and her sisters received a candy recipe from their great aunt, Pearl Varney, which led to the family’s love of baking and candy making.
Angela’s sister, Jennifer Ellis, bakes the cakes at A Piece of Cake.
“I’ve been baking since I was 10 years old,” she said. “I remember my mother had an old fashioned cake decorating kit, I guess that’s where it started.”
While Jennifer bakes the cakes, her niece, Amy Carter James, is the artist, Jennifer said. She decorates the birthday, special occasion, holiday and wedding cakes for A Piece of Cake.
Another sister, Coletta Parsley, also helps out, making candy and confections.
Everything at A Piece of Cake is homemade, even the fondant used to decorate cakes.
In addition to cakes and cupcakes in several flavors, A Piece of Cake also makes cake pops, cookies and candy and chocolate covered strawberries.
The bakers ask for a two week advance order for wedding cakes. Birthday and other specialty cakes can be ready sooner.
Their business hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 until noon. They are located in the Village Shoppes at Belfry, their phone number is 606 519-4920. Visit them at facebook.com/#!/apieceofcakeconfections.
