WILLIAMSON — A scholarship was recently established in the memory of a Mingo County couple, one which will support students pursuing a degree at any Marshall University campus in the health care field.
Homer and Jackie Preece started their married lives together in Delbarton, and for roughly the past 30 years, resided in Mason. They had three children, Homer Keith Preece and Lana Kersey of Point Pleasant, and Deanna Crum of Delbarton.
“My parents played a major role in shaping my life and lives of my sisters,” Homer Keith Preece said. “They taught us how hard work and a great education provide opportunities for happiness in the workplace and life. Dad retired from Southern Ohio Coal Company as superintendent of Mine #3. Mom owned and operated floral shops in Delbarton and Mason. They cherished each other, their children and had strong family traditions and values. Both had strong work ethics and knew the benefits of a post-secondary education. My parents encouraged me and my sisters to pursue our college degrees.”
The Preece Family Scholarship Fund was established at the Community Foundation in Mason County, and, starting in spring 2013, will be awarded annually to a student (graduating high school senior and/or currently enrolled college undergraduate) from Mason or Mingo County in West Virginia and/or Gallia or Meigs County in Ohio. The student must be admitted into the College of Health Professions or a related health program as a full-time undergraduate student and be pursuing a four-year degree at any Marshall University Campus.
Applicants must also have a 3.0 or greater grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and have a need for financial assistance. The scholarship application is now available online through the Community Foundation’s general scholarship process and can be accessed through the website at www.pacfwv.com through the March 6 deadline.
“This scholarship gives our family a way to honor and remember our parents,” Homer Keith Preece said. “By creating a permanent scholarship fund in their name, they will continue to have an impact on the lives of the young people of our area for generations to come.”
Donations to build the scholarship fund can be mailed to the Preece Family Scholarship Fund, MCCF, P.O. Box 66, Point Pleasant, WV 25550. All donations to the fund will be acknowledged by the Community Foundation as a charitable tax deduction.
