The summer will end for Mingo County students next week, and Mingo Central High School welcomed students and parents with the Back to School Bash Thursday.
Assistant Principal Marcella Charles said about 350 people attended the event. Students picked up and resolved issues with their schedules, got information about school activities and career choices, play games and win prizes.
Charles said the event will also serve to keep parents up to date with the GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) program at the school.
The GEAR UP program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The program provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grants serve students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow them through high school. GEAR UP funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.
Universal Free Meals, which provides free breakfast and lunch to all students, will continue in all Mingo County schools. This helps raise the student’s level of attention and energy during the day.
Parents are encouraged to monitor the educational progress of their child and provide the advice and guidance that will make a tremendous difference in the child’s educational success. With West Virginia’s adoption of the Common Core Standards along with 45 other states, Mingo County schools’ curriculum will become more rigorous, more focused on critical content and more relevant to what students need to know in order to be college and career ready.
West Virginia State Police are also asking the public to observe speed limits in school zones, 15 mph, and allow more travel time in the mornings and afternoons as children travel to and from school.
WVSP will have Troopes randomly patrolling various school zones during the peak commuting hours to help insure motorists’ compliance. Drives are also reminded that they must use a “hands free” device while talking on a cell phone, and that texting while driving is illegal. These violations will be strictly enforced in school zones throughout the year.
