WILLIAMSON — After spending a total of 48 days in two different jails in two different Kentucky Counties, a man featured in the Daily News’ inaugural “Mingo’s Most Wanted” article is now serving time in West Virginia.
John Andrew Slone, 26, of Hatfield, Ky., originally of Matewan, was picked up yesterday by the Williamson Police Department from the Big Sandy Detention Center in Paintsville, Ky.
“He was wanted on charges in Pike County and Magoffin County,” WPD Chief C.D. Rockel told the Daily News. “After he served his time there, we went to get him so he could serve his time here.”
Slone was charged with two felonies in West Virginia: Delivery of a controlled substance, Marijuana; and delivery of a controlled substance, alprazolam (Xanax).
Rockel said that the charges stemmed from incidents that occurred December 2010.
Slone was arrested earlier this year after the Daily News published its first “Mingo’s Most Wanted” article. He was originally named in an indictment. After learning of this, Rockel said that Slone called the WPD and admitted to his crimes and said that he would turn himself in.
He never did, but he was arrested regardless at a residence in Hatfield by three WPD officers and Billy McCoy, a Pike County, Ky., Sheriff’s Deputy without incident in mid-May.
“The articles work,” Rockel said, “they help. Within a few hours of that story being out there, we were getting hundreds of tips on Slone’s whereabouts.”
Slone is currently lodged at the Southwestern Regional Jail, in Holden. He is scheduled to be arraigned before Judge Michael Thornsbury this morning.
