“Everyone has a story to tell,” Paula McCoy Hatfield says. And she gives them a way to create a keepsake that tells their story.
Paula is an Independent Designer with Origami Owl Custom Jewelry, a direct sales jewelry company with a unique twist.
Paula holds interactive events where she helps guests create one-of-a-kind personalized jewelry that best reflects their life.
Origami Owl was founded by a 14 year old entrepreneur. Inspired by the desire to create jewelry that would be beautiful, meaningful, whimsical and fun, Isabella Weems launched the company with the goal of saving enough money to buy her first car. In 2010 she introduced the “Living Locket”, a necklace that can be customized with meaningful charms that represent things that are important to you. From home parties, the success of Origami Owl quickly grew in fanfare and today Weems’ business model is replicated by independent designers nationwide.
Paula said that since she began as a designer, the response has been tremendous.
“I am having three or four parties a week,” she said. “Its been amazing.”
Most of Paula’s events are ‘make and take’ parties. Those attending get a locket, and fill it with charms from ‘jewelry bar,’ a type of charm buffet where they choose charms that represent a person, event or interest. The theme of each locket is unique, depending on the person creating it.
“I had a lady who had been married for 50 years,” Paula said. “She put charms in her locket that marked her and her husband’s first date.”
Paula said her first locket paid tribute to her father, Kenny McCoy, who had recently died. She put her father’s initials, his birth stone, a guardian angel wing and a simple circular charm that says ‘inspiration,’ as he was an inspiration to her.
“The best part of being a designer is hearing the stories, and helping people choose and create a locket that tells their particular story,” she said. “I cry when I hear some of them.”
Paula said she tries to keep all the charms in stock, so people can have a hands on experience, but with the tremendous success of her Origami Owl business, she sometimes has to order charms, which are usually in within five business days.
