WILLIAMSON — Williamson residents voted Tuesday in the city’s primary election, ultimately deciding that the people currently serving on the council were the people they wanted to stay on the council.

It was a busy day of voting and counting for voters and poll-workers, but when the final tally was called at Williamson City Hall, it was a clear — each incumbent won their own race. However, only two councilmembers were opposed.

Councilwoman Sherri Brown, Ward 2, and Councilman Matthew Thornsbury, Ward 3, defeated their respective opponents, Mentola Jackson and Ralph Hall. Councilman York Smith, Ward 1, Councilwoman Connie Rockel, Ward 4, and Mayor Darrin McCormick cruised to victory unopposed.

It was a close race between Thornsbury and Hall, one which decided by a mere handful of votes. With a total vote tally of 73 to 62, Thornsbury defeated Hall to remain a councilman and win re-election to the seat he was appointed to in 2009.

Brown’s race with Jackson offered a bit more breathing room. Brown took a total of 78 votes to Jackson’s 36.

“I thank everyone who supported me, who came out and voted and who hit the streets for me,” Brown told the Daily News after being told her of victory at city hall. “I will keep striving to do what I’ve done for the past four years and will continue to do it for the next four and more.”

Thornsbury also thanked his supporters.

“I just want to thank everyone who voted for me,” he told the Daily News.

Rachel Siggers was the sole candidate for committeewoman, and won unopposed, collecting a total of 91 votes in Ward 2.

Full voting results are as follows:

• Williamson Tower, Ward 1, Precinct 1:

— York Smith, 33 votes;

— Darrin McCormick, 31 votes.

• Harry L. Joyce Community Center, Ward 2, Precinct 3:

— Sherri Brown, 66 votes;

— Mentola Jackson, 32 votes;

— Darrin McCormick 83 votes;

— Rachel Siggers, 78 votes.

• Williamson City Hall, Ward 2, Precinct 5:

— Sherri Brown, 12 votes;

— Mentola Jackson, 4 votes;

— Darrin McCormick, 14 votes;

— Rachel Siggers, 13 votes.

• Goodman Manor, Ward 3, Precinct 7:

— Matthew Thornsbury, 73 votes;

— Ralph Hall, 62 votes;

— Darrin McCormick, 107 votes.

• Williamson Fieldhouse, Ward 4, Precinct 9:

— Connie Rockel, 22 votes;

— Darrin McCormick, 24 votes.

There are a total of 2,753 registered Democrat voters who could have voted yesterday, not including any Independents who could have as well. Since it was a Democratic primary election, registered Republicans, which number at 322 in Williamson, could not vote. There will be no Republican ticket in the general election in June. Those who won yesterday will run unopposed in the general election.
