The Southside Elementary Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) may very well include a lot of future bosses, if the awards they won at recent state level competitions are any indication.
The mission of STLP is to advance individual capabilities; to motivate all students and to create leadership opportunities through the use of technology.
STLP students design projects, products and services that help the school and community. The program is open to students in all grade levels in every school in Kentucky.
More than 6,000 students, parents and educators attended the competition, showcasing what they could do with technology in the arts, science, technology, engineering, mathematics and career skills in 42 learning catagories.
Christie McCoy is the STLP coordinator at Southside. Her team recently attended the Kentucky STLP competition at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
McCoy explained that teams presented showcases that demonstrate how STLP can address an issue that is confronting a school or community. Southside’s project concerned childhood obesity, and used the motto “Get Moving Southside.”
The team engaged in activities such as walks and other exercise, and presented their showcase using powerpoint presentations, a website, brochures and the STLP’s Facebook.
Several of Southside’s team members placed well in Lexington, Ky., including:
• Kylesh Soma, who won second place at the state competition in the Future of Design and Contour for his design of a race car;
•Jeremiah Lowe and MacKenzie Maynard won a second place ribbon for troubleshooting technical computer issues;
• Logan Maynard won a first place competition for Dell and Microsoft Gaming.
McCoy also won an award for having the most showcases at a state level competition.
