WILLIAMSON - The Mingo County Commission recognized the Williamson Women’s Club on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the club joining their national association, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Leigh Ann Ray, Presdient of the Williamson Club, said the group raises funds through its annual pinto bean luncheon held the first Friday of each November and an annual yard sale. Proceeds go to a fund which used to provide a $1,000 scholarship for a local student to attend Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.

In addition, the club supports various local causes. They are a bronze sponser for the annual Tug Valley Relay for Life, sponsor the King Coal Baby Contest, support the Tug Valley Recovery Shelter with donations of supplies and gift wrapping each Christmas, provide Christmas gifts for foster children and a sponsor for the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon, where they man the water station at the finish line each year.

Williamson Women’s Club members staff the Red Cross blood drives that take place at the mall and the First United Methodist Church Williamson, purchases cleaning supplies and other items needed to help flood victims with clean up, donated money to do a send off dinner for our local National Guard, support the Geoffrey E. George Comfort House in Hungtington. Ray said the club purchased all new bed spreads for the house and we make an annual donation to the Comfort House.

“We want to thank and honor you for your volunteerism and community service,” MCC President John Mark Hubbard said.
