Rachel Baldwin Staff Writer FOREST HILLS, Ky. - Hearing the diagnosis of a potentially fatal disease is the last thing anyone ever wants to hear. When the patient is a 2 year-old little girl with a captivating, infectious smile that will light up a room and who means the world to her family, the diagnosis of Leukemia can bring life as you know it to a screeching halt and turn your world upside down. Jenna Danielle Ryan Deskins is a beautiful two and half year old little girl with a head full of curls and a mischievous smile that commands attention. To her grandparents, Shannon and Sam Deskins – she is simply “their world”. On March 18th, 2013, Jenna was diagnosed with ALL leukemia,” explained Shannon, a Registered Nurse employed with the S. Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital. “She had been sick with the flu, and never seemed to get over it. She continuously ran a high fever, was very pale and stopped eating. The morning that we rushed her back to the hospital, she had developed unusual bruising on her head and neck. After doing blood work, our worst fears were confirmed...Jenna had Leukemia.” Jenna was transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Cabell Huntington Hospital where she remained for 8 days before she was upgraded to serious but stable condition. The toddler underwent extensive chemotherapy and other forms of treatment for an enlarged spleen and liver and had numerous blood and platelet transfusions. Shannon was forced to take off work for an extended leave of absence in order to provide the care necessary for her granddaughter. “I couldn’t leave her, nor would I if I could have. Jenna needs me there, our babies come first,” said Shannon. “She has a long road to recovery ahead of her but I know with God on our side, all things are possible.” A bank account has been established at the Community Trust Bank (The Jenna Deskins Leukemia Fund), Acct. # 042102694, for anyone who would like to make a contribution. Fundraisers are also being planned by caring members of the local community to assist in alleviating some of the medical expenses for Jenna and her family. Shannon asked that the Daily News relay her gratitude for all of the thousands of prayers that have been sent up for Jenna’s healing, and said those thoughts are what keeps her family pressing forward with undying faith and hope. “We’ve been contacted by people we have never even met who heard about Jenna,” said the grandmother. “We are humbled by the outpouring of support for her and we ask that you please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.”
