Tug Valley opens with win at Sherman

SETH – The Tug Valley Panthers got their season started off on the right foot with a 26-6 road win at Sherman on Friday night.

Coach Tony Clusky’s squad rolled up 393 yards of total offense and took a commanding 26-0 lead in the first half.

Phillip Lucas scored the first touchdown on a 1-yard run with :08 to go in the first quarter. Quarterback Mikey Newsome completed the conversion pass to David Runyon to give the visitors an 8-0 lead.

With 6:23 left in the first half, fullback Aaron Muncy scored on a 20-yard reception from Newsome. The conversion run failed, but the Panthers led 14-0.

TVHS hit paydirt again with 3:43 left in the second quarter as Jessie Mays made it into the end zone from six yards out. The conversion pass failed, but the Panthers led 20-0 at that point in the game.

Then with 1:23 left in the half, Jessie Mays got into the end zone after a 19 yard run. Once again the conversion pass failed, but Tug Valley led the Tide 26-0 heading into the dressing room at the half.

Clusky called off the dogs in the second half playing a lot of younger kids and the Panthers elected to keep the ball on the ground.

The second string defense gave up a TD to Sherman with 6:58 remaining as Justin Clark scored from two yards out. The conversion pass failed to make it 26-6.

Tug Valley’s defense held Sherman to 129 yards of total offense, 49 on the ground and 77 through the air.

Mays had 16 carries for 156 yards and a pair of TDs to lead Tug Valley. Muncy had 9 carries for 63 yards and a receiving TD, Runyon four carries for 29 yards and a 2-point conversion reception, Tyler Estepp had five tries for 17 yards, Myron Copley nine carries for 16 yards and Lucas six totes for 11 yards and one touchdown.

Newsome was 5-for-10 passing for 111 yards and one TD. He did not throw any interceptions. Five different receivers caught passes for the Panthers.

Defensively Isaac Parsley had 10 tackles to lead Tug Valley, while Thomas Baisden had seven tackles, Copley three stops and a sack, Joshua Cassell had three tackles and Lucas had three tackles and one fumble recovery.

The Panthers had 10 penalties for 60 yards, while Sherman had nine flags for 90 yards.

Tug Valley is now 1-0 and will travel to Meadow Bridge Friday night.
