On individuals with unclaimed funds

Dear Editor:

Recently I was given a list of individuals in my district who have unclaimed funds at the State Treasurer’s Office.

I sent letters notifying these individuals that their names were listed on the document. Unfortunately, many of the letters came back undeliverable because the addresses have changed. My office also received numerous calls concerning the validity of the letter. The information is valid and any citizen can assess it to check to see if they have unclaimed property. The information is printed on the Treasurer’s Office website (kytreasury.com).

Any person claiming an interest in any property that has been surrendered to the Commonwealth (per KRS 393) should file a claim with the Kentucky State Treasury by completing an official claim form. This form is available by calling toll free 1-800-465- 4722 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (EDT). That office can assist you with any questions you may have.

My office does not have the form, but I understand it is a simple process to go to the Kentucky Treasury website and enter a name for detailed information. I understand it takes at least 12 weeks to complete a claim.

I hope this information is helpful to all those citizens with unclaimed property.

Thank you for all your support.

Sincerely,

Johnny Ray Turner

Senate Minority Chair
