Mrs. Nora Zell Collins, born May 12, 1914, of Maynardville, Tenn., formerly of North Matewan, passed away on April 27 at Tennova Medical Center, Knoxville, Tenn., following an extended illness.

She was cared for by her granddaughter, Susan Bowman and husband Paul, of Maynardville.

She was preceded in death by husband Bill Collins; son, Donald Collins; and grandsons, Danny Collins and Donald Collins, Jr.

Mrs. Collins retired from the State of West Virginia, having worked for the Department of Highways and the Department of Health. She was also employed as Mingo County Deputy Clerk for many years. She began her long work career at Red Jacket Coal Company. Mrs. Collins loved fishing and her houseboat in Tennessee. She was very active in politics and served on the Democratic Executive Committee. She was lovingly referred to as “Granny” by a host of friends in West Virginia and Tennessee. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are one son, Bill and wife Mary of Kanawha City; grandson, Vernon Lee Collins of Phelps, Ky.; sisters, Mary Lee Rife, of Oceana, Betty Murphy, and Josephine Akers, both of North Matewan; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday May 1, at Chambers Funeral Home in Matewan with Minister Gene Clemens officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Roberson Cemetery. The Family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
