PARKERSBURG — Both of Mingo County’s high school teams are still in the hunt for the Mountain State playoffs. The W. Va. Secondary School Activities Commission’s (WVSSAC) high school football computer ratings were released Tuesday.
Mingo Central, coming off a win over Tolsia, is ranked No. 10 in Class 2A this week. Tug Valley lost to Wyoming East last week, but still remains at No. 13 in Class A. The top 16 teams in each class qualify for the playoffs which start Friday Nov. 9.
This week the Miners will play host to perennial Class A power Wheeling Central Catholic on Saturday afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. Mingo Central’s three remaining games are with Logan and Nicholas County on the road and Herbert Hoover at home.
Tug Valley will host Van this week. It will be homecoming for the Panther student body on Friday night. The Panthers will then have their bye week, before finishing the regular season with a road game at Man and a home game with Clay County.
Wayne, the defending Class 2A state champs, moved up to No. 1 this week after an easy win over the top ranked team in their class last week, the Scott Skyhawks. Bridgeport, a former Class 3A team, comes in at No. 2, followed by Frankfort. Scott dropped to No. 4.
Another regional team, Wyoming East, that beat Mingo Central in the first game of the season, comes in at No. 9. Westside come in tied for No. 15 and would make the playoffs if the season ended today. Chapmanville and River View come in at 19 and 20 respectively.
Logan, a future opponent for Mingo Central, is No. 10 in Class 3A this week. Cabell Midland remains No. 1 in the state’s largest classification, while Martinsburg is No. 2.
Wheeling Central, the Miner’s opponent this week, comes in at No. 16 this week. The Maroon Knights play one of the toughest Class A schedules in the state.
