CHARLESTON - Mingo Central senior tailback Joe May has been named to the Charleston Daily Mail pre-season high school football all-state squad. The squad includes players from all three of the state’s classifications, AAA, AA and A.

The speedy, 5-foot-9, 170 pound May was selected as a utility player. May did everything for Coach Yogi Kinder last season. He not only ran the ball well, but was the top receiver in Class AA in the state.

His statistics show that. May had 45 catches for 553 yards and 11 touchdowns in Mingo Central’s first season. He averaged 12.3 yards per catch. May ran the ball 66 times for 506 yards, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. He scored 11 times on the ground.

Tug Valley quarterback Mikey Newsome was picked as honorable mention and on the list of “players to watch.”

Several other players from the southern coalfields are among those picked by the Daily Mail sports staff.
