The Tug Valley High School Lady Panthers volleyball team spoiled the Logan Lady Wildcats’ senior night, beating the hosts 3-2 in a match that went down to the wire.
Tug Valley won the first set of the match, 15-25, with Karah Sheppard serving the final six points for the Lady Panthers. Tug then topped Logan 19-25 in the second game on Cheyenne Baisden’s spike to the back line.
But, Logan rallied and won the next two sets, beating an exhausted Lady Panthers team, 25-23 and 25-18. Jaclyn Hobbs won the fourth set for Logan with an ace.
The Lady Panthers, though, got their second wind in the fifth set and beat the Lady Wildcats 12-15 when Logan hit the ball into the net on gamepoint.
“Overall, we played a whole lot better,” Logan Coach Ernestine Conn said. “I was real proud of them in the third and fourth games. I thought they played well.”
Conn said the momentum swung in favor of Tug Valley in the deciding set.
“That helped a whole lot,” Coach Conn said.
Tug Valley Assistant Coach John Williamson said he was pleased with how well his team played despite being so tired.
“I think they played well, especially toward the end,” Williamson said. “They finally woke up and played like they should. Maybe this gives us a little momentum going into the tournament next week.”
Sheppard led the Lady Panthers with 18 kills, eight aces and five blocks, while Baisden had seven kills and two aces. Brooke Stevens had four kills, two aces and three blocks; Amy Hall had one kill and six aces; Shawn Kiser served five aces, while Amber Hopkins and Marissa Milum each served an ace.
Tug (7-10) plays Mount View on Tuesday at Tolsia High School in the first round of the sectional tournament.
Honored during the senior night festivities were Hannah Workman, Laken Conn, Jaclyn Hobbs, A’Lee Miller, Stephanie White and Brianna Brown.
The Lady Wildcats also honored Tug Valley’s two seniors, Sheppard and Brooke Stevens. The Lady Panthers had previously honored Logan’s seniors during the TVHS senior night last week.
Logan returns to action Thursday at Man to finish the regular season.
The Lady Wildcats play Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. at George Washington High School against St. Albans in the first round of the sectional tournament.
Tug Valley returns to action Thursday night at Chapmanville. The match is Chapmanville’s senior night.
