GOODY, Ky. – Pike County Central scored 29 third quarter points to blow open their game with Phelps in the opener of the Pike County Bowl Friday night played at Belfry’s CAM Stadium.
The Hawks flew past the Hornets 62-6 to pick up their second win of the season.
Pike Central led 20-0 at the half. The game was scoreless after one quarter, but the Hawks got things going early in the second quarter as Marcus Johnson scored from five yards out. Brad Elkins kick made it 7-0.
Left-handed quarterback Mac Justice then connected with Wes Pugh for an 85-yard TD. Elkins kick was good and the Hawks led 14-0 with 5:17 left in the half.
With 2:48 left in the second quarter Justice hooked up again with Pugh for a 41 yard TD pass. The kick was wide, but Phelps fell behind 20-0.
The third quarter was Justice break lose on a keeper to score a 68-yard TD. The conversion pass to Johnson made it 28-0.
At the 8:34 mark of the third Justice hit paydirt again from 21 yards out. The conversion pass was deflected, but PC led 34-0.
Coach John Chapman’s offense kept pouring it on in the third as Dakota Ray got into the end zone from 2-yards away. Kolt Pruitt ran in for the 2-point conversion to make it 42-0.
With 2:48 left in the quarter, Ray scored again from 33 yards out. The extra point kick by Elkins made it 48-0. At that point, the clock continued to run, as per the Kentucky high school mercy rule.
Ray scored again early in the final quarter for the Hawks on an 18-yard run. The kick was good. Finally, Dalton Kelly hit paydirt from on a 12-yard run. The pass failed, but Pike Central led 62-0.
Phelps got their only score as Davon Smith raced 79 yards on a punt return. The conversion run failed.
Zack Avina was the MVP of the game for Phelps, while Wes Pugh won the award for Pike Central.
Pike Central is now 2-0 and will host Powell County Friday night, while Phelps, now 0-2, will travel to East Ridge for their next game.
