PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Two Pike County schools have been exempted from completing the rest of the year due to flood damage.

Belfry Middle School Principal James Hurley spoke to students and parents Monday evening to shed some light on the condition of the school and plans for the remainder of the term. However, after a visit from the Pike County Health Department on Tuesday, Hurley reported Belfry Middle and Johns Creek Elementary will be exempt from class for the rest of the year.

Due to the storms and the May 9 flooding, 21 counties and six cities in Kentucky have declared a state of emergency.

Gov. Steve Beshear has asked President Obama to declare a major disaster for impacted areas.
