The 28th annual Pike County Bowl will be held this weekend in Belfry and Pikeville with four games being featured.

The games are sponsored by Community Trust Bank and WYMT-TV.

On Friday night, the games will be held at Belfry’s CAM Stadium. The opening game, scheduled to kickoff at 6:05 p.m., will feature the Pike County Central Hawks against the Phelps Hornets. Both of those teams opened up last week, with the Hawks defeating Greenup County and Phelps losing to Jenkins.

In the nightcap the host school, and Class AAA state runner-up for last season, Belfry, will take on visiting Harrison County. That game is scheduled to start at 8:35 p.m. This will be the Pirates first game of the season, while Harrison County lost to Sheldon Clark last weekend in the Thorobred Bowl.

On Saturday, at W.C. Hambley Athletic Complex in Pikeville, there will be two more games. The first matchup features Pike County rivals Shelby Valley against East Ridge at 6:05 p.m. In the second game of the football twin-bill, the Pikeville Panthers will take on Powell County at approximately 8:35 p.m.

Each school gets funding for their programs from the sponsors. Over the life of the bowl games, high schools have received $685,000 in donations.

Each year eight queen candidates are selected from the schools and one is chosen to be Pike County Bowl Queen. She is chosen by independent outside judges based on certain criteria. The queen is presented with a $1,500 scholarship. The queen will be crowned Saturday night at Pikeville.

Most of the games are rematches from last season. The Belfry Pirates played Harrison County in 2011, winning that game 34-7, while Pike Central defeated Phelps 57-6. Shelby Valley ran past East Ridge 55-6 last year, while Pikeville beat Tellico Plains 35-8. This year the Panthers will be the only school with a different opponent.

Since 1996, there have been Legends Award Recipients and this year’s honor will go to Don Batten, an alumnus of Pikeville High School.

Advance tickets can be purchased at any Community Trust Bank location and at Pike County high schools for $6. The tickets at the gate on game night are $7
