Speaking for what I believe in

Dear Editor:

First of all, I would like to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to express my concern for the citizens of Williamson. It is my opinion that the city is putting hardships on the low income people of the city. I realize that my letter may not set very well with some of my friends, and does not reflect on the new council.

These things which I speak of were pushed through, just before the old council left office.

In the last five years, the water and sewer fees have doubled from about $20 to $40. Now they have raised garbage fees to $60 more on a year. An emergency fee on garbage has been tacked on and it will be $4 per month. I believe this fee is illegal. I hope the new council will have more consideration for the people than the previous ones. I do want to say that the workers they do have are good workers, but twice as many workers are needed. Before the city was contracted out, there were enough men to do the work. Now they can’t or won’t do the work that is needed. Don’t take my word for this: just look around and show me one street that has been resurfaced. The ditch lines are not cleaned out. The streets are in the worst shape that I have ever seen. As well as a lot of other citizens, I feel we were much better off before the city contracted out the work.

The only streets that ever get cleaned are the three or four blocks downtown. We should not have to pay for an emergency fee, since this is suppose to be an incorporated city. We are supposed to get something for the tax we pay now! The way things stand now we are having to pay for everything, police and fire protection, being the latest fees.

I am sure there are many people that feel the same way I do. I hope you will speak out and express your feelings.

I believe in speaking up for what I believe in (stand for).

Thank you,

Pete Dillon
