Blessed Assurance in the 21st Century
CBS has recently released a survey that revealed millennials are the most stressed generation. They reported higher stress levels than the other age groups represented in the study. It is interesting that this is a concerning issue in the 21st century for all ages. With modern conveniences and technology, shouldn’t life be easier? Responsibilities such as food preparation, house work, travel, and many careers are not as difficult as they were before the 20th century. In spite of the new advantages, we seem to struggle more with living happy and quality lives. There may be many explanations for this report, still the Bible can help us overcome in every case.
One relevant scripture can be found in Hebrews 4:9, “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.” In this book, we can read about different types of rest that is promised to those with faith. It becomes apparent that the Lord not only cares about our souls, but also our total well-being. We don’t have to wait to meet him “up yonder,” but can invite him into our everyday lives and experience him now. Receiving him into our hearts not only gains us salvation, but also a peace that passes understanding. As we pray, he will take care of our problems and work out our situations according to his will. When Jesus lives within us, we receive a blessed assurance that will help us rest.
These promises will even follow us into eternity, as the ultimate rest is a place called Heaven. Although we are not promised the perfect, problem-free journey in this life, the next one will be a true paradise. Scriptures promise that God’s people will rest from their labors. We will forget our troubles as suffering, sickness, and death will cease. The glory of Heaven cannot be googled online, and even the latest technology will not give us true happiness. Only Jesus can give us the blessings described in Hebrews. These scriptures warn that unbelief and disobedience could rob us of the incredible experience. If this assurance is missing from our hearts, we can receive him today.
