A former Burch High School basketball star, Rick Preece, has been named as the new head coach of Ambassador Christian Academy in Williamson, West Virginia.
“We recently named Rick Preece as our middle and high school head basketball coach,” said Donald Lafferty, athletic director of the school.
The new Christian school, which is housed in the old Williamson Middle School building, is a merger of Regional Christian of Delbarton and Williamson Christian, which was located in downtown Williamson.
“It is a great opportunity,” Preece said. “I’m looking forward to it. This will be a big change for me.”
Preece is a former Burch High standout during the mid 1990’s and was a part of one state championship team and one state runner-up team. He was an All-State selection his senior year.
Preece currently serves as Assistant Pastor at New Testament Church in West Logan and is employed by Alpha Resources.
Preece’s son Corey played last year for Chapmanville Regional High School’s basketball team. He is a junior and will play for Ambassador Christian Academy this year.
Preece said he has helped coach some at the middle school level at Lenore and done some individual work with several players over the past few years.
“I look forward to working with these young students,” said Preece.
The school’s nickname is the Eagles. They will still play their home games at the Williamson Fieldhouse, but now they have a gymnasium at the school so they can practice.
The school plays in the West Virginia Christian Athletic league, which has a state tournament each year. Other teams in that conference include Wood County Christian, Teays Valley Christian, Cross Lanes Christian, Greater Beckley Christian and others.
Greater Beckley also participates in the WVSSAC and is in the same region at Tug Valley. They have made it to the public school state tourney the past two seasons and won the state Christian conference tourney.
Lafferty said the school also plans to schedule some public schools, as well as many private Christian schools this season.
