Hundred (W.Va.) High School has canceled its football season due to a lack of players.
Locally, Phelps High School is having the same problem. Head coach Randy Smith is practicing and hopes to get enough players out for the Hornets to field a team.
Media outlets report that Hundred Coach Rex Rush told the team on Wednesday that the Hornets had 14 players. The team needed 18 players to continue its preseason camp.
The players can transfer to other schools in Wetzel County and will be eligible to play football. The state Department of Education’s website shows the Class A school in Wetzel County had 118 students enrolled during the 2013-2014 school year.
Several schools are now looking to fill a gap in their schedules.
