Chase Harler, a sophomore guard who led Wheeling Central to the Class A state basketball title in March, has committed to West Virginia.

Harler made his decision this past weekend, as soon as the Mountaineers made him a scholarship offer. It’s the first commitment of the 2016 class for WVU.

The 6-foot-3 Harler averaged 20.2 points last season. He had also received a scholarship offer from Marshall. He will be a junior this season for the Maroon Knights.

Harler is reportedly a fan of WVU, so it is no surprise he jumped at the offer after Coach Bob Huggins and his staff presented the scholarship to him.

… Highly touted Huntington Prep basketball star Montaque “Teki” Gill-Caesar signed this past weekend to play at the University of Missouri. Gill-Caesar, a 6-foot-6 forward from Ontario, is a consensus top 50 recruit.

Gill-Caesar averaged 16.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, two assists and 1.7 steals last season at Huntington Prep. This comes as no surprise because Missouri earlier hired his prep school coach Rob Fulford as an assistant.

Gill-Caesar was rated the No. 31 prospect in the class of 2015 by Rivals.com and rated the top player in Canada by ESPN.com.

… Marshall’s first Saturday football practice, Aug. 9, will be open to the public, in addition to practices Monday through Friday during the rest of the August workouts.

The Thundering Herd will host Fan Day on Sunday, Aug. 10 starting at 4 p.m. and players will be on the field for autographs at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Fans are asked to remain in the chair-back sections on the West side of the stadium until the team heads to the East stands for the team photo.

Admission is free. A scrimmage is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 and will be open only to Big Green members. However, those wishing to join the Big Green will be able to do so by visiting customer representatives at Gate A. Marshall students may gain admittance free by presenting a valid student identification at Gate A.

… The local independent men’s basketball league that is forming is still looking for teams. They will play at the Williamson Fieldhouse on Sunday’s starting in late August. The registration fee is $200 per team and the deadline to enter is August 12th. There will be about 15 games, plus a tourney. If interested contact Brandon Ball at 606-625-2458 or contact the Fieldhouse at 304-235-3690.

… After finishing third in the NAIA in punt-return yards per attempt at 16.1 in 2013, University of Pikeville wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson signed a NFL free-agent contract on Sunday with the Indianapolis Colts.

Richardson, a native of Pahokee, Fla., who played one season with the Bears recorded 39 receptions for 587 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. He also returned eight kickoffs for 121 yards and 18 punts for 290 yards and three touchdowns.

… High school football practice started Monday in West Virginia. The Mountain State is always a couple of weeks behind our neighbors in the Bluegrass State. Belfry has a scrimmage game at Richlands, Va. on August 15 and will host Hazard, Ky. for another preseason game on August 22nd. Some Kentucky schools will open up on that Friday night. Most of the schools in this area will open their regular season on Friday, August 29th.

…. The Williamson Daily News annual High School Football Edition is scheduled to come out on Wednesday, August 27th. The special edition will feature preview stories, team and individual photos, rosters and schedules for all of the teams in this region. Our sports writers and photographers here and at our sister newspapers are already attending media days and scheduling those sessions with some of the other schools.
