Former Marshall basketball star Kareem Canty has re-established his commitment to the Auburn Tigers.
It may be the end of a wild five weeks in which Canty was committed to transfer to Auburn, then South Florida, before deciding to stick with Auburn.
“My heart was in Auburn and I just couldn’t turn down playing for Coach Pearl in the SEC,” Canty told ESPN.
Canty will have to sit out the 2014-15 season. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
He’s the fourth player to commit to the Auburn program under new coach Bruce Pearl. Junior college transfer Cinmeon Bowers, New Mexico State transfer K.C. Ross-Miller and T.J. Lang will be eligible to play next season.
Canty averaged 16.3 points and 5.5 assists for Marshall last season.
… Tennis fans in the Mountain State will have a chance to see some of the greatest players in history. Hall of Famers John McEnroe and Pete Sampras will participate in The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic for the third consecutive year.
The West Virginia resort announced that Tommy Haas will return for his second visit in September, and Andy Roddick will make his first appearance in the exhibition tournament that made its debut in 2012. Combined, the four competitors have 22 career Grand Slam singles titles and nine men’s doubles titles.
This year’s event spans two days. On Sept. 20, McEnroe will square off against Haas, currently ranked 17th in the world. That match will be followed by one between Sampras and Roddick. The following day, McEnroe and Sampras will take on Haas and Roddick in a doubles match.
… Thursday night, the Reds added another hard thrower in University of Virginia right-hander Nick Howard, who they selected 19th overall in the first round of the draft. Howard, a converted third baseman and shortstop, now serves as the Cavaliers’ closer. UVA hosts Maryland in the Super Regional on Saturday at noon. In short relief, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Howard saw his velocity jump from 93-94 mph to 95-97 mph, and touch 98 at times. He also possesses a mid-80s slider
… The West Virginia University women’s basketball team will be part of the 16-team field of the 2014 preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament. WVU will join Albany, Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, Colorado, Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, Mercer, Mississippi State, North Dakota, Penn State, Rider, Seton Hall, St. Francis Brooklyn, Towson and Western Kentucky. It will be WVU’s second WNIT appearance. Its first came in 2009.
The event opens Nov. 14-15 with the first round, plays the second round Nov. 16-17 and the semifinals Nov. 19-20, with the championship on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.
… The Marshall-Miami (Ohio) football game on Aug. 30 at Yager Stadium in Oxford, Ohio, has been set for 3:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN3.com, ESPN announced Friday morning.
The game is the season opener for both teams and the start of Herd Coach Doc Holliday’s fifth season at Marshall.
