NAUGATUCK – The Man Hillbillies blanked the Tug Valley Panthers 12-0 in the opener of the Class A sectional baseball tournament on Monday evening at Naugatuck.


The Hillbillies went ahead 2-0 in the top of the 1st inning and added two more runs in the 2nd. They took a commanding 11-0 lead with six more runs in the 3rd frame. The visitors tacked on one more run in the top of the 4th for good measure winning via the mercy rule with the 12-0 lead in five innings.


Braden Griffin smacked a home run for Man, while Kenny Jo Adkins sliced a triple.


Bailey Beckwith had a pair of hits for the Billies. Several other players had base hits for MHS including Cam Simpson, Tyler Blair, Cayce Mullins, John Thomas Keffer and Seth Chapman.


Several players had two RBIs including Griffin, Keffer, Beckwith, Adkins, Messer and Blair.


Trevin Horn and Phillip Lucas got the only hits for the Panthers.


Jake Adkins got the win on the mound for the Hillbillies, while Ethan Hager took the loss for Tug Valley. Adkins struck out 13 Panthers in the five inning game and did not walk any batters. Hager had 5 strikeouts and 9 walks for TVHS.


The two teams were scheduled to play the second game of the local sectional on Tuesday, weather permitting. The Class A sectional is a double elimination tourney.
