Huntington Prep basketball coach Rob Fulford tweeted on Tuesday night that he was not applying for any positions, which takes him out of the running for a spot on new Marshall Men’s basketball coach Dan D’Antoni’s staff.
Fulford cited “unfinished business” at his current school as his reason for staying. He told the Daily Mail the day D’Antoni was announced as Marshall’s new coach that, while his main focus was on Huntington Prep, he would listen to what D’Antoni would have to say if contacted.
Both coaches hail from Mullens, W.Va.
… Many Williamson area Herd fans hope that former Wolfpack All-American Mark Cline will get to stay on D’Antoni’s staff in Huntington.
Mark is a longtime college assistant and he is known as a top-notch recruiter. He also knows the ends and outs of the college game. Mark can also run the summer camps.
These are things that D’Antoni has not done during his career as a high school and professional coach.
Mark’s mother lives near Huntington and has not been in good health. Friends and family know he would like to stay in his home state and continue working at Marshall.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see if D’Antoni keeps a fellow West Virginian on his staff. Before Marshall, Cline has coached at schools like Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion.
… The Charleston Gazette reported that former NBA guard Chris Duhon may join D’Antoni’s staff. Duhon played for Chicago, New York, Orlando and the LA Lakers during his pro career. He played his college basketball at Duke.
… Sam Hinkle, a former athlete at Matewan High School back in the 1980s, sent me a message via Facebook. He was getting an oil change at Ford dealership in Hickory, NC when he met Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry. That’s not a bad way to kill some time when you’re waiting on your car at a service center.
… Due to inclement weather, the baseball game between West Virginia and Marshall scheduled for Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park was canceled.
