GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first inning and went on to swat the Magoffin County Hornets 15-5 in a mercy rule 5-inning game.
BHS batted around and took advantage of several walks and had some timely hits in their early rally to take the lead. They also had several stolen bases to advance runners into scoring position.
Belfry was led offensively by Keaton Taylor and Garrett Fannin, each of whom was 4-for-4 with a walk.
Taylor stole four bases, giving him 37 on the season, breaking the school record of 35 set by Timmy Lovern in 2010. Two of Fannin’s hits were beat out bunt sacrifice attempts.
Joey Duty, Aaron Taylor both went 2-for-2 and had two walks, while Trenity Carr had a double. Fannin, Zac Fields and A. Taylor each had a pair of RBI’s.
Austin Dotson was the winning pitcher, throwing 2.1 innings of relief, giving up one earned run.
Zac Salyer was the losing pitcher for the Hornets.
Magoffin County rallied for three runs in the top of the 3rd inning to make the game interesting.
Belfry coach Michael Hagy pulled starting pitcher Dustin Jewell in the 3rd inning.
The Pirates are now 19-10 and were slated to play at Paintsville today.
