The Matewan Tigers and the Gilbert Lions will battle it out on the football field one more time this Saturday at Buck Harless Stadium on the campus of Mingo Central High School.
The two schools had a storied rivalry for many years.
This game will feature alumni of those two schools in a charity game with proceeds going to the Mingo Central Miners football program.
As game organizer Joey Fields said, “It’s time to break out the helmets and pads and go at it one last time on the gridiron.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with ticket prices $8 for adults and $5 for students and kids under the age of five will be admitted free.
Rosters have already been put together and many former all-state and all-area players have signed up to play one more time.
Players must have graduated or attended Gilbert or Matewan High Schools in order to participate. Uniforms and equipment are provided to both teams thru the sign-up fees.
Fans will probably remember most of the players slated to hit the field wearing green and white from Matewan. They are Scott Hamilton ((1991), Kevin Starr (1989), Hady Ford (1994), David Starr (1995), Ryan Kinder (1999), Terrence Pruitt (2005), Josh Sammons (2009), Garth Simpkins, Joe May (2013) and many more.
For Gilbert, donning the purple and gold, are Drew Mounts (1983), Matt Ellis (1984), Jeff Mounts (1985), Anthony Brown (1997) Daniel Mounts (2000), Alan Miller (2004), Quinn Miller (2008) and many others.
Yogi Kinder and David Mark McCoy will be coaching the Matewan squad, while Gordon Carter and Jerry Miller will coach the Gilbert squad.
The Tigers won the Class A state title in 1993, while the Lions won the state championship in 1995.
Practice times have been scheduled for both teams and will be on Thursday, May 1st and Friday May 2nd at the Mingo Central football field. Matewan will practice from 6pm - 8pm and Gilbert from 8 pm-10 pm.
(This game is unaffiliated with “Gridiron Alumni.)
