HAZARD, Ky. - This past Tuesday, for the first time since 1997, Belfry beat Hazard on the baseball diamond by a score of 9-7.
The Pirates were 0-9 versus Hazard since the1997 season.
Belfry took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning when Reed Williamson led off with double to left field. He then scored on 2-out double to left by Jacob Francisco.
Hazard tied the game in the 3rd frame when Conner Whitaker reached safely on an error. Then Aaron Taylor scored on 2-out single by Ryan Smith.
In the Belfry 4th, Williamson led off and was hit by a pitch. Trenity Carr and Francisco both walked and then Caleb Stanley had an RBI single to center. T. Carr then scored on a wild pitch.
Keaton Taylor then had an RBI single, followed by a Joey Duty, who was hit by a pitch and he picked up an RBI.
Williamson then got an RBI walk and A. Taylor smacked a 2-run
single to left. In the end, Belfry rallied for 7 runs in the inning.
Hazard came back with 5 runs of its own in the bottom of the 4th frame. Blake Nidiffer reached safely on an error, then Rudy Akermon had a single to left field. After that, Whitaker walked and Anthony Hughes cracked an RBI single. Then Ryan Smith and Cole Ratliff each had RBI singles for the home team.
Hazard cut into the lead with another run in the 6th. With 2 outs, Ratliff was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on single by Coby Cumbow.
Belfry got an insurance run in the 7th. A. Taylor walked and then eventually scored when Francisco reached safely on an infield error.
Belfry, now 16-8, will play at Man, W.Va. on Monday and host MaGoffin County on Tuesday.
