Two old football rivals will meet again on the grid iron as former players from Matewan and Gilbert will battle it out on Saturday, May 3rd.
The organizers formally announced the Gilbert vs. Matewan Alumni Game. It’s scheduled for Harless Stadium at Mingo Central High School and will kickoff at 7 p.m.
Sign-up fees will be announced at a later time. You must have graduated or attended Gilbert or Matewan High Schools in order to participate. Uniforms and equipment will be provided to both teams.

All proceeds from the game will benefit the Mingo Central football team.
The registration fee is $70 with a signed consent form. That cost covers uniforms, all equipment and a new jersey for the game. The last day to register is April 1st.
Gilbert will be coached by former Lion’s coaches Jerry Miller and Gordon Carter. Matewan will be coached by former Tiger’s coaches Yogi Kinder and David Mark McCoy.
There is no age limit. Players and everyone on the field must sign a waiver to participate. Contact Joey Fields at (304) 785-2436 regarding the game or if you have any questions.

SHORT STUFF: The Rough and Rowdy Brawl results from the event held in Williamson this past weekend have been reported by promoter Chris Smith. The results were: Lightweight Champion, Channing Preece of Kermit, WV, Runner-up Jacob Hurley of Whitesburg, KY; Middleweight Champion Nicholas Jackson of Norton, VA, Runner-up Robert Daniels of Stone, KY; Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cook of Whitesburg, KY, Runner-up Billy Roberts of Pikeville, KY; Women’s Heavyweight Champion Crystal Mullins of Jenkins, KY, Runner-up Kelly Webb. The Ring Girl Champion was Sara Staley and Runner-up Alice Russell. Preece is a former basketball player at Tug Valley High School.
…. Bob Mullett, game director of the West Virginia Athletic Coaches Association’s WCHS-TV/FOX-11 North-South Football Classic, has announced the head coaches for its 2014 event.
Bill Haddox of East Fairmont High School will lead the North Bears. He has served as the EFHS head football coach since 2001. His 2007 team advanced to the Class AAA state semifinals. Prior to East Fairmont, Haddox was head coach at Tucker County High School, where he led the Mountain Lions to the 1988 Class AA State Championship game.
Lewis McClung of Greenbrier West High School returns to guide the South Cardinals. He has been the head football coach of the Cavaliers since 2002. McClung led Greenbrier West to a 12-2 record last season and an appearance in the 2013 Class A State Championship game. He previously served as an assistant coach in last year’s N-S Football Classic.
