Each year the Sons of American Revolution sponsors a writing contest, inviting students to submit essays on events that shaped American history.

Approved for listing by the national association of secondary school principals - the essay contest is open to sophomore, junior, and senior high school students who are U. S. Citizens or legal aliens.

The topic of each essay must deal with an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated with the American revolution, the declaration of independence, or the framing of the united states constitution. A complete list of contest rules are posted online at www.sar.org, click on “George s. & Stella M. Knight essay contest.”

The Big Sandy SAR chapter will pay $200 for the winning essay at the chapter level. Last year’s winning essay, the U. S. Constitution by Ellora Franklin of Emmalena, Ky. won $200 from the Big Sandy Chapter and $100 from KYSSAR for placing third at the state level.

It’s also a national contest with each state chapter winner competing for a chance to win $2000, $1,000, or $500 - 1st, 2nd, 3rd place awards from the national society, SAR.
