FEDS CREEK - A weekend crash claimed the life of a Pike County man.

Kentucky State Police from Post 9, Pikeville, received a call Saturday to investigate a two-vehicle crash with injuries at Card Mountain Road on U.S. Highway 460 in the Feds Creek area of Pike County.

Information obtained at the scene indicated that Barry Shortridge of Mouthcard, was traveling west on U.S. 460 when his vehicle ran off the right shoulder of the roadway, making contact with the guardrail.

Shortridge over-corrected his vehicle, crossing the center line into the eastbound lane of U.S. 460 and struck an eastbound vehicle operated by Terry Sawyers of Mouthcard, troopers said.

Sawyers was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Deputy Coroner Denver Bailey, according to the accident report. A passenger in Sawyer’s vehicle was taken to Pikeville Medical Center for treatment of their injuries, troopers said.

Shortridge was arrested for driving under the influence, first-offense, and leaving the scene of an accident. He was lodged in the Pike County Detention Center.

The accident remains under investigation by KSP accident reconstructionist Trooper Bryan Layne.
