SOUTH WILLIAMSON, Ky. - Just as the raindrops began to fall last Thursday evening, an accident occurred on the Kentucky side of the Pete Dillon (Harvey Street) Bridge that involved a Sears’ service van and a Kia SUV.

According to eye witnesses and the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Ronald Coleman, of Pikeville, who is a service technician for Sears, was traveling southbound on U.S. 119 and was in the turning lane to go across the bridge into West Virginia. Upon getting a green light, he began the left handed turn and was struck by a Kia Sorrento SUV operated by Jonathan Collins, of Chattaroy. Eye witnesses relayed to the investigating officer that as far as they could tell, Coleman had the green light and Collins failed to stop on a red.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries but refused to be transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Coleman suffered a laceration to his right forearm and Collins had a visible contusion on the side of his head. Appalachian First Response Ambulance Service and EMT’s with the Belfry Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and provided medical care. The firefighters also performed traffic control and cleaned the debris and fluid form the roadway.

Both vehicles suffered substantial damage and the van was expected to be a total loss. They had to be removed from the scene by a local wrecker service.
