The Mingo Central tennis team was in action late last week in matches at Chapmanville and Poca.

On Friday, the Mingo Central girls posted their first win by downing Poca, 5-2.

No. 2 seed junior Maria Ramey, undefeated this year in singles, was impressive winning her match 8-0. Kaitlyn Johnson and Megan Taylor both won matches handily 8-1, 8-2 respectively. The No. 1 seeded doubles team of Ramey/Taylor and the No. 3 seeded team of Johnson/Ritchie won 8-2, and 8-1 in their matches. Julianna Music and Charlise White saw their first action of the season and played very well, according to MCHS coach Julius “Boo” Hatcher. They almost pulled out an upset losing 5-8. The boy’s action was suspended by rain with Mingo Central leading matches 3-2. “We had some of our regular girls out and I was proud of the Central girls that filled in,” Hatcher said.

In the Chapmanville match, both the Mingo Central boys and girls lost to the Tigers 6-2 in their matches last Thursday. The only male to win was Kyle Surber 8-1 in his singles match and the only female to win was Maria Ramey winning 8-4 in her singles match.

“They have a strong girls and boys team,” Hatcher said of Chapmanville. “But the Central boys lost very close matches with Julius Hatcher, the No.1 Seed losing in a tie breaker, Brennon Slone losing 4-8 and Hatcher/Surber, the No. 1 doubles seed losing 6-8, after having a 6-3 lead.

This week’s matches for MCHS are with Westside at Westside; Riverview at Gilbert (the Harless Center); Sherman at Sherman; and Charleston Catholic at Charleston.
