Hillbillies run down Panthers

NAUGATUCK – The Man Hillbillies defeated the Tug Valley Panthers 24-14 Friday night improving their record to 8-1 on the season.
The loss dropped Tug Valley to 3-6 with one game remaining on the season.
The Hillbillies came into the game ranked No. 5 in Class A.
Man took the lead with 8:51 left in the first quarter as quarterback John Keffer connected with Cayce Mullins on a 57 yard pass touchdown. The conversion pass failed and the Billies led 6-0.
Man increased the lead to 12-0 when Neil Mullins scored on a 19 yard run with 9:00 left in the half.
Tug Valley got its first TD with 5:21left in the first half when senior David Runyon scored on a 5- yard run. Tyler Conley hit Justin Baisden for the 2-point conversion pass to make it 12-8 at the half.
In the third quarter Man saw Mullins hit pay-dirt with 5:18 left. The run failed, but the Hillbillies led 18-8.
With 2:23 left in the third, Man’s Braden Griffin broke loose for a 27 yard TD run. The pass failed and the Billies led 24-8.
Tug Valley got one final TD with 1:54 left in the final quarter as Conley hit Thomas Baisden on a 17 yard pass. The PAT run failed and the score was 24-14.
Man rushed 36 times for 170 yards and Keffer was 9-of-16 passing for 127 yards and one interception. The Billies had 297 total yards of offense and only three penalties for 20 yards.
Tug Valley only had 19 yards rushing against the stingy Man defense. That was on 27 carries. Conley was 8-of-17 passing for 138 yards.
The Panthers only mustered 157 yards of total offense. They only had three flags for 15 yards in the game.
Runyon had 9 carries for 36 yards to lead TVHS and one TD. He caught a pair of passes for 62 yards. Philip Lucas had three receptions for 44 yards. Thomas Baisden had two catches for 29 yards.
On defense Runyon led Tug Valley with 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss; Conley had 6 tackles, one tackle for a loss; Corbin Oliver had 6 tackles; Thomas Baisden had 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and one sack, while Chad Hundley had five stops and one tackle for a loss.
The Panthers are now 3-6 and will end their season at Clay County this Friday night. Man is now 8-1 and will host Van in the final regular season game of the year.
