RED JACKET - The Mingo Central Miners head up to Kanawha County to take on the Herbert Hoover Huskies Friday night in a Cardinal Conference matchup.

The Miners, 6-2 overall (3-1 conference), have already assured themselves of a winning record, however they are trying for a top eight seed in the upcoming Mountain State playoffs.

Two wins in the final two games of the season and a little help from a couple of other schools and MCHS could even host its first-ever playoff game. If they win out and even if they don’t finish in the top eight, the Miners would get their highest seed to date for the football program.

The Miners made the playoffs for the first time in school history last fall, but were beaten soundly in the first game by Keyser.

Mingo Central is coming off a big win over Class 3A Logan last weekend. It has been billed as the young school’s biggest win to date.

The Miners will round up their regular season next week at home hosting Mount View. It will be homecoming for Mingo Central High School.

Sophomore running back Deonte Joplin leads the Miners balanced offensive attack with 672 yards on 102 carries and he has rushed for six touchdowns.

Junior tailback Chance Lester has 427 yards on 68 attempts and seven TDs. Senior fullback Dakweon Willis has rushed for 310 yards on 60 carries and has five TDs.

Quarterback Stevie Hammond has rushed for seven TDs and 195 yards on 51 carries. Hammond has thrown for nine touchdowns and is 41-77 passing for 787 yards. He has seven interceptions.

Senior wide receiver Alex “Booger” Lee has 18 catches for 433 yards and five TDs.

The Miners have a plus-16 in the turnover margin so far this season and the defense has really stepped up its game and made some big stands the last few games.

Mingo Central heads into the game ranked No. 9 in Class 2A. The Huskies have a record of 2-6, but have still been able to score a lot of points this season. Herbert Hoover is always tough on their home field.

The game can be heard on WXCC radio 96.5 FM with Joe Kinzer and Pedro Ledger.
