Rockefeller praises Mingo Central; short stuff
Kyle’s Korner ….
By Kyle Lovern
The administration at Mingo Central High School got a nice letter from U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller commending them on collecting bottled water for Sissonville High School.
The Miners hosted the Indians right after the chemical spill in the Elk River and Kanawha Valley area. The players, parents and cheerleaders got together and brought cases of bottled water to the game and gave it to the Sissonville players to take back with them.
“As West Virginians, we know how to come together during the most difficult times. We make sure our friends and family are safe. We embrace each other in tough moments,” Rockefeller wrote. “Thank you Mingo Central High School for all you did to help, and for demonstrating firsthand the true meaning of sportsmanship.”
Belfry seniors Trenity Carr and Sani Warren, who helped lead the Pirates to the Class 3A state football championship this season, have verbally committed to the University of Pikeville. The national signing day is Wednesday, February 5th. We’ll have more on this developing story in the near future.
… Tug Valley High School will be getting several good players from its two feeder schools. Both Lenore and Kermit Middle Schools have solid basketball programs this season and these players will soon be the future. Panther fans should be excited.
… Needless to say there have been several games that have been postponed because of the recent winter weather. Coaches are reminded to contact the WDN about the games that have been rescheduled. Tournament time is right around the corner and many teams will be playing three to four games per week for the rest of the season. Let’s hope there won’t be much more snow this year.
… Walt Cline has resigned as head baseball coach at Mingo Central High School. Cline, the former coach at Gilbert, coached the Miners in their first season. Cline took a medical leave of absence last spring and the team was coached by Roger Staton, a former assistant at Matewan. The job will be posted and a new coach will have to be selected for the coming season.
Cline did note that Mingo Central does not have a baseball field and has had to practice and play at Gilbert and Lefty Hamilton Park in Williamson, which makes it difficult to build a program.
… West Virginia University men’s basketball junior Kevin Noreen has been named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District II men’s basketball first team as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). A sport management major, Noreen has a 3.7 GPA.
… The Williamson-Belfry Alumni football game has been changed to Friday, April 11, instead of April 12 because of a conflict with the Belfry prom. More no this and other alumni games at a later date.
… For what it’s worth, my prediction for the Super Bowl is a win by the Denver Broncos over the Seattle Seahawks in a close game.
